I want to help

Will you help us make more waves for vulnerable children?

Following the success of our inaugural Dragon Boat Regatta in 2018, ‘Making Waves’ is back in 2019, bigger and better than ever!

We’re looking for ten teams of 13-15 people to battle it out on the River Avon, in St Nicholas Park, Warwick, to see who will be crowned King of the River. No previous training or experience is required, you just have to pick up a paddle and have fun!

The Dragon Boat Race will take place on Saturday 29th June, from 10am – 3pm.

Can you join us? You can sign up as an individual, and we will place you with a crew, or you can gather a crowd of friends and colleagues together and enter as a team. You need to pay a £30 deposit (non-refundable) to secure your place, and commit as a team to raise a minimum of £1,500 per boat. That works out at £100 per person. Alternatively, you can sign up as a partner for the fundraising project, at a cost of £15 per month for a commitment of a year. If you choose partnership, your boat’s fundraising target will be reduced accordingly. Participants must be aged ten or over.

In 2019 the event will raise funds for the work of the Morning Star Care Centre, an informal school and vocational training centre in a beach slum area in Sri Lanka. In particular we are supporting the Field Officer, the frontline worker with one of the most challenging jobs on the staff, out in the community identifying children at risk, and working with families in conditions of addiction, abuse, neglect and exploitation. Our partners at MSCC want to appoint a second Field Officer, as there is far too much work for one person.

We are raising funds to pay the annual salary and expenses of the existing Field Officer AND a new Field Officer, for three years. For this we need to raise £15,600 in profit. Any additional funds would go towards the broader work of the centre, which supports vulnerable children living in slum communities into education or training, including many school drop-outs, and children living in chaotic and neglectful homes.

There will be prizes for the boat raising the most money, as well as the fastest boat, in timed heats, semi-finals and the final. Last year’s event was great fun for all, including the families who came along to watch. There will be a BBQ and drinks available, and activities for children.
