Across all our projects worldwide, over 85% of the children we support are at high risk of food poverty.
There are many factors pushing their families to the edge.
Across many nations in Africa, drought has caused crops to fail. Our projects in Zambia and Soroti, Uganda have already asked us to provide food for children facing starvation. We’re keeping in close contact with our partners in Ethiopia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. In South East Asia, a cyclone damaged crops in Bangladesh.
Other nations are facing crisis because of economic downturn. Our partners in Cambodia have asked for support. Children in Sri Lanka are also at risk.
Finally, places like South Sudan are dealing with food insecurity caused by conflict. Our emergency appeal helped many families and their children, but as the conflict continues, our partners anticipate that further support will be needed. Ongoing conflict in Myanmar is a huge risk to children there too.
Behind all these nations and the causes of their struggles, it’s children who are at risk. And food makes a tangible difference:
*Madeline lives in Zambia, one of the nations hit by a severe drought this year. Zambia is usually a net exporter of food – but this year the drought has been so severe that they can’t even feed themselves. And, like many families, Madeline’s were surviving on the bare minimum. Just one meal a day after school was all they could afford.
Thanks to our local partners in Zambia, Madeline’s family were one of 50 vulnerable families that benefitted from a feeding programme supported by Global Care. Now, she, her sister and her mother have two meals a day.
Madeline loves school, and particularly loves reading – she is allowed to borrow books from school and reads them at home using her solar lamp. When she grows up, she wants to be a teacher. Thanks to the feeding programme, she is growing up healthy, and getting the education she needs to achieve her dream.
We’re raising £20,000 to tackle food insecurity for hundreds of children across our projects.
You can help.
This Harvest, your donation will help relieve hunger for the children we support, whatever the cause.
If we can provide funds to feed children like Madeline, she will grow up strong and healthy. Her family will be more stable, without the emotional and mental burden of finding food to survive day by day. Best of all, Madeline will be able to concentrate at school, so she can gain the skills she needs to earn a living wage as an adult.
Your donation ensures Madeline and children like her are not just fighting to survive, but have the chance to thrive.
