To see *Anna smile means more than you can imagine.

Ten-year-old Anna was abandoned by her drug-addicted parents and raised by her grandparents. Her grandfather worked hard selling fish to keep the family afloat. Sadly, his death in December 2023 left the family in deep financial hardship.

That’s when the team at the Morning Star Care Centre (MSCC), stepped in. Anna gained a sponsor, offering welfare support, and started attending school. After so many years out of school, she struggled with behavioural issues.

Over time, the team have worked closely with her to build trust. She is now making great progress, becoming more confident, friendly and eager to learn.

Building on Success

Our partners in Sri Lanka, Community Concern, have been delivering transformational change to children like Anna at MSCC for over 25 years, by providing informal education and a broad package of welfare support. 

In the last year alone, MSCC supported 64 children aged between 8 and 19, including 22 children with additional learning needs. 60 of the 64 children have experienced some kind of trauma or bereavement. 20 have at least one parent who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, and 10 have a mother who is dealing drugs. Yet, despite these huge social and emotional challenges, by providing a supportive, attuned learning environment, welfare support and psychological care, MSCC sees children’s lives change for the better.
