16-year-old *Alicia is the oldest of four children. Life was good for the family until her father unexpectedly passed away.

Her heartbroken housewife mum struggled to put food on the table, let alone scrape together school fees. As the oldest, Alicia feared she would have to give up her dreams of education to help support the family. Because of the worry and grief, depression crept in.

Thankfully, her concerned teachers referred Alicia to Global Care’s partners in Malawi, and they were able to step in.

Our partners, Muthange, are committed to helping marginalized children access and complete education, with a particular focus on girls.

They run a mentoring programme in two secondary schools and one primary school, as well as providing essential school supplies and paying school fees for some of the poorest students.

Muthange were able to intervene with practical support to help keep Alicia in school, paying her fees and providing her with school equipment and books, as well as emotional support through their mentoring programme.

Our partners say: “Her mum could finally breathe, and Alicia’s heart swelled with gratitude. The sadness that lingered since her dad’s passing began to lift. Now Alicia dreams again. She wants to become a teacher, to give back. Her message is one of heartfelt thanks and a plea – ‘keep reaching out to others who are struggling like me’.

Alicia is one of 56 children supported by Muthange in the last year, including 34 girls.

This work in Malawi is funded through the monthly donations of UK Changemakers, and through our Children At Risk programme. Help more children like Alicia today.
