Thank you so much to all our wonderful supporters who have responded so generously and promptly to this emergency appeal! Our initial target has been reached. However if you are planning to give, our partners report continuing need – so any donations made below will continue to support the essential needs of displaced families.
From Poverty to Desperation
South Sudan is a fragile nation which emerged out of significant conflict. There is a continual stream of refugees arriving here to escape ongoing fighting in neighbouring Sudan.
But, in February this year, tribal conflict within South Sudan displaced around 10,000 people. They fled their homes with only what they could carry – from the poverty of home into the desperation of homelessness. Our partners in Abyei, where many have arrived, want to help the most vulnerable households – about 5,000 people in total. They want to provide food for 3 months as well as essential items such as mosquito nets, plastic sheets for shelters and mats for sleeping on.
4-year-old *Anok is an orphan. She lives with her aunt, who cannot find work. They often go to sleep hungry. Anok has no clothes except those on her back. Her aunt can’t afford to enrol her in school, let alone the educational materials she’d need. She is one of many children who are living on a knife-edge: without the food parcel supplied by our partners in South Sudan, her chances of survival would be minimal.
Thanks to our donors, we were able to immediately provide £5,000 from our Emergency Relief Fund. This enabled our partners to begin supporting desperate displaced families. We have now sent out another £4,500. But the crisis is far from over.
Families currently displaced have no way home and no way to survive, and more families continue to arrive, putting huge strain on an already impoverished region. Fighting could break out again at any time.
We need to equip our partners to keep providing essential emergency aid in this growing crisis, which has been largely overlooked by the world’s media.
Please join us to raise at least £10,000 so we can continue to be there for families in crisis.
